Paper Glossary

A

Abrasion resistance :  The level of continuous friction that paper can withstand.

Absorption :  The property of paper that causes it to absorb liquids such as ink or water.

Accordion fold :  A method of folding paper that resembles the bellows of an accordion.

Acid-free :  Paper with a neutral pH or pH greater than or equal to 7 helps increase paper longevity, as well as minimixing the harmful effects on objects such as photos that come in contact with paper. Fillers such as calcium carbonate neutralize paper acidity.

Acidity :  The amount of acid found in a paper substance is measured by its pH level. Classifications from 0 to 7 are considered acidic, while classifications measuring 7 to 14 are considered alkaline.

Against the grain :  A 90° angle to the paper's fiber direction. For best results, generally fold with, rather than against, the grain.

Alcohol/alcohol substitutes :  To decrease a printing press’s water surface tension, liquids containing alcohol or chemical substitutions with fewer fumes are often added to the fountain solution.

Alkaline papermaking :  A manufacturing method that uses caustic additives and fillers such as calcium carbonate to create paper with a pH measuring from 7 to 14, for uses in which paper permanence is critical.

Aluminum plate :  A metal press plate used in offset lithography to transfer the image during moderate to long print runs.

Announcement cards :  Paper cards with matching envelopes. Typically selected for weddings, graduations and other social events.

Aqueous coating :  A water-based coating applied to paper to prevent ink scuffing or rub-off. Can be applied either in-line or off-press after printing.

Archival :  Designation for acid-free paper with a minimum of 2% calcium carbonate to help minimize deterioration over time. Also referred to as "buffered paper".

Artificial parchment :  Paper fashioned to emulate traditional antique, natural parchment.

Artwork :  Generic description of materials prepared and readied for print.
